Shorin-Ryu Matsumura Seito — sometimes called Matsumura Orthodox — is one of the oldest and most direct lineages of Okinawan karate still practiced today. Unlike many styles that evolved through multiple generations of reinterpretation, Matsumura Seito traces an unusually clear and unbroken line back to its founder. The word “Seito” itself means orthodox or legitimate, a deliberate declaration that this system preserves the original teachings without significant alteration.

The style originated in the royal capital of Shuri, Okinawa, where karate developed among the noble class and palace guards of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It was shaped by the unique cultural position of Okinawa — a small island kingdom that maintained trade relationships with China, Japan, and Southeast Asia, absorbing martial influences from each while developing something entirely its own. What distinguished Matsumura Seito from later derivatives was its emphasis on natural body mechanics, economy of motion, and the practical application hidden within kata — principles that remain central to the way we train at this dojo today.
